So I really like how effortlessly this encapsulates the true meaning behind the often flashy and misdirected, “born this way,” or alternately “born gay” mentality, ceaselessly beat into us by Miss Lady Gaga and other products of the pop culture machine.
Whether our sexuality is predicated on some genetic coding or if it’s inculcated at a young age through our experiential socialization, the point is it isn’t something actively opted for, and I don’t even see the logic behind debating its origin, as it is almost definitely the result of throwing these two possible sources in a bowl, beating them to unrecognizable pulp and mixing them homogeneously together. The point is we will likely never be able to disinter its root cause, or separate the two likely culprits, nature and nurture, as they are so fabulously, unfalteringly, and inseparably gay married.
Stop worrying about it. We are who we fundamentally are due to no choice or very little choice of our own.
We cannot choose who we love, or to what kind of person to whom we experience sexual attraction.
However, we can choose how we behave towards other. Always. Regardless of our history or genetic predisposition. After all, I hear there isn’t a gene for the scripting of blind hate.
